About Art Deco Marvels

The Art Deco period to the purist is from 1919 to 1939 but the style continued (or morphed if you will) to the art modern style with a more minimal approach well into the 50s.   It's characterized by bold colors, geometric shapes, and luxurious materials. The style influenced many areas of design, including architecture, product design, transportation and visual arts.

There are many recognizable elements that exemplify the art deco style - such as sunbursts, waterfalls, geometric patterns, bold colours, sleek and elongated figures, gazelles and greyhounds, the use of luxury materials, and murals. "Eyebrows" are cantilevered projections above windows and balconies that act as weather shades.  

Art Deco in our e-zine features hotels in South Beach and London to commercial buildings in Vancouver like the Marine building to movie houses and residential homes in Napier.  The Chrysler building in NY is the quintessential art deco masterpiece to many.  Buffalo City Hall gives it a run for its money.
